Summer Soltice on Russian North!
June 20 – 30th, 2008, the Expedition team of 4 people and 2 cars spent Ligo (Summer Solstice Festival) on the Russian North. Their travel route lied though the Hibin mountains located on the Kola peninsula beyond the Polar Cicle, the Solovetsky Islands renowned as for its legendary Russian Orthodox monastic settlement as for its infamous Solovki prison camp of Soviet times. They visited one of the most ambitious building project of the Soviet Gulag - the Belomorkanal; also the defensive fortifications of the Mannerheim Line left after the Russian-Finnish War of 1939-40, and many, many other sights and places. The journey came out not only interesting and entertaining but in some way also challenging. The team members surely have overcome all difficulies and are thinking of next directions to explore!
Presently there is another expedition crew of 18 people on 8 jeaps following the same route. These guys are also full of courage and determination to meet their challenge, for what is our life without travels and risk?
